what students are saying

“Jessilee is amazing; the perfect mix of fun, focused and professional! It's a big challenge with amazing rewards!”

“I can highly recommend this class for anyone. The class is taught superbly by Jessilee Windhaus, an experienced improvisor with a lot of experience teaching improv classes. You learn to visualize then express to an audience scenes from anywhere and anytime while also getting the audience to laugh. This was well worth the time invested and the cost of tuition. For me, the most fun was watching others in the class perform. There were a lot of ROFL moments!”

“Jessilee was great! I'm so happy to have had this opportunity. Her improv lessons were foundational to the beginnings of a successful improv future. I always felt comfortable and that I was able to express myself and try new things. I was able to step outside of my comfort zone and grow, which was my goal from the start. Very happy with the class!”

“A great opportunity to spend a relaxing time with good people, perform improv, and develop improv and public speaking skills.”

“Fabulous and knowledgeable instructor!”

“This was the most fun I’ve had as an adult. Jessilee was super encouraging and got us all to be playful and creative in a way that kept me grinning for days.”

“Jessilee, was amazing. She really took the time to explain improv concepts and made sure we all had a safe space to learn and thrive. This was a completely new experience for me, and I'm so happy with my decision to attend.”

“I learned several useful techniques to unlock the hidden potential in scenes and characters.”

“I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed everyone. The experience was one I won't forget.”

“Jessilee is an excellent instructor who has mastered the ability to both encourage and positively correct students in this crazy art of improv. Nearly all of the participants were completely new to improv and obviously did not know the 'rules.' Although there were many flubs, not once did we feel discouraged or chided; only encouraged in a supportive structure.”

“The class was great and lots of fun. I became less fearful of improv and plan to continue learning.”

🎓 Improv Classes FAQ —

What kind of improv classes do you offer in Sacramento?

We offer a range of adult improv classes in Sacramento, including Intro to Improv (Improv 101), Foundations of Scene Work (Improv 201), Advanced Scene Study, and rotating weekend intensives and specialty workshops. Whether you're brand new to improv or looking to sharpen your skills, there's something for you at every level.

I’ve never done improv before—can I still take a class?

Absolutely! Our Improv 101 class and drop-in improv classes are designed specifically for beginners. You don’t need any experience, theater background, or quick wit to get started. Just bring an open mind and a willingness to play!

I’m not that funny—can I still do improv?

Yes! In fact, we don’t want you to try to be funny. The humor in improv comes naturally from honest reactions and teamwork—not from telling jokes or trying to be clever. Our Sacramento improv classes focus on listening, supporting your scene partner, and building something together. The funny shows up when you're not chasing it.

I have anxiety or mental health struggles. Will I be okay in an improv class?

You're not alone—and yes, you’ll be okay. Many people in our Sacramento improv community live with anxiety or other mental health challenges. Improv is surprisingly therapeutic: it teaches you to stay present, build confidence, and connect with others in a low-stakes, supportive environment. We meet you where you are.

Is improv just for extroverts?

Not at all! Some of our most talented performers and students (and our founder!) are introverts. Improv helps everyone step out of their comfort zone at their own pace. It's about connection, not performance. Our Sacramento improv classes for adults are built on creating a safe, playful space for all personality types.

How old do I have to be to join a class?

Our public classes are for adults aged 18 and up. Occasionally, we offer youth and teen improv classes in Sacramento, but unless otherwise noted, all our standard improv classes are designed for adults.

What if I can’t make every class session?

We understand that life happens! For our 6-week improv courses, we encourage you to attend all sessions if you can, but missing one or two won’t prevent you from participating. Drop-in classes are, of course, come-as-you-can. If you ever need help figuring out which class best fits your schedule, we’re happy to help.

Where are your Sacramento improv classes held?

Our improv classes take place at venues throughout Sacramento, including the Geery Theater and Ooley Theater. As we grow into our new home base, you'll always be able to find current locations and schedules on our Classes page.

Are your Sacramento improv classes autism-friendly?

Yes. We strive to make our improv classes inclusive and accessible to neurodivergent folks, including those on the autism spectrum. While we don't specialize in neurodiversity, we welcome and regularly teach autistic students and are happy to make accommodations.

Here are some things we provide:

  • Sensory tools like sunglasses, fidget toys, and earplugs

  • Alternatives to eye contact and physical touch

  • Structured breaks (always at the same time)

  • Encouragement to stim, sit out, or take space as needed

  • Clear expectations, predictable class structures, and multiple ways to give feedback

  • An anonymous reporting tool (Red Flag Reporting) for any issues that arise

If you have specific access needs, just let us know in advance—we’ll do our best to support you. Improv can be a fantastic way to build social skills, confidence, and connection, and we’d love to have you in class.

Are your classes kind, supportive, and compassionate?

Our core teaching philosophy centers around respect, safety, and support. We believe everyone learns best when they feel safe, seen, and celebrated. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • We avoid touching students or singling people out without consent

  • Breaks are structured and always honored

  • Instructors are trained to give constructive feedback with kindness

  • We uphold community guidelines on consent, respect, and inclusion

  • We encourage all learning styles, questions, and self-advocacy

You don’t have to be loud, outgoing, or “on” to succeed in our classes. We’ll meet you where you are and help you grow with care and encouragement.
